Independent packaging insight · Australia & New Zealand

Packaging insight for decisions that have to work.

Circular Blueprint looks at FMCG packaging where regulation, materials, product protection, recovery systems and cost meet. It is an evidence-led resource for people making and reviewing packaging decisions across Australia and New Zealand.

Beyond the headline

A pack can be compliant and still be a poor decision.

A material may be technically recyclable but not accepted in the relevant collection system. A lighter pack may use less material but increase product loss. A claim may sound responsible while leaving out the condition that makes it true.

The useful question is rarely “Is this sustainable?” It is “What does this decision improve, what does it compromise, and what evidence supports the claim?”

01

Evidence over slogans

Claims are tested against the finished pack, its intended market and the source behind them.

02

Systems over material labels

Material choice is considered alongside collection, sorting, reprocessing and real end markets.

03

Trade-offs made visible

Product protection, manufacturing, cost and recovery all belong in the same conversation.

How the work is approached

Useful analysis has to show its workings.

Circular Blueprint is not built around hot takes. The aim is to make a complicated packaging question clearer without pretending the trade-offs have disappeared.

Start with the finished pack

The substrate alone rarely determines the outcome. Components, decoration, adhesives, contents, format and likely consumer behaviour matter.

Separate possibility from real-system outcomes

“Technically recyclable” is not the same as accepted, collected, correctly sorted, reprocessed and sold into a viable end market.

Prefer primary and authoritative sources

Regulators, government agencies, recognised assessment tools and original technical material take priority over repeated industry summaries.

State uncertainty and review time-sensitive claims

Rules, infrastructure and guidance move. Articles should make important limitations visible and be checked when the underlying position changes.
